A Short Background
From my Internet-free childhood, I remember “TV Bridges” – a hit of Soviet television. It was a very popular show and an extraordinary event. They were held almost in real time, with a delay of only a couple of seconds, or even less. Two studios in different parts of the world could communicate visually, the correspondents gave a live broadcast from the scene, and Kashpirovsky treated people with hypnotic suggestion.
It is difficult to make a good knowledge assessment test. I faced this problem back in 2003. We started a distance learning system (DLS) at Vinnytsia National Technical University and began to accumulate a database of tests for various courses. It is impossible to say that all of them were perfect. All teachers, including experienced ones, made mistakes that turned the tests ineffective.
Later, we created our learning platform – Collaborator. This is an LMS for business. And now, when it serves more than fifty companies in Ukraine, I again see similar errors in test questions.
It might seem that making a good test is impossible without solid methodological skills and pedagogical experience. But in fact, common sense, a little time and some simple tricks are enough to receive a good result. I’ll tell you about them.
The good news
LMS Collaborator can create training resources from a finalized MS Word document. All you need to do is to download the file of the DOCX format, and the system will offer to convert it to a resource of the “Page” type. This significantly saves time for resource authors.
- Create a new resource of the “File” type.
- Download the document.
- After loading, the system will offer to “Convert the file to Resource Page? You need to agree.
- Save and view the result.
The result come as a single page HTML resource, which loads quickly and has every chance of being perfectly displayed on any device – from desktop to mobile phone.

It is quite difficult to determine the responsibilities, which a corporate e-learning specialist should carry out. If you look at the issues that are discussed at profile conferences, communities, and e-learning specialists forums, then you might think that such an expert is not an ordinary person, but some sort of multi-handed Hindu god Shiva who should do everything from administrating LMS database to creating and translating training videos.
Such a multitasking of work duties is a norm for this sphere. E-learning is a high-tech activity and actually should be handled by the team working at the company’s department of distance learning. However, each team member shouldn’t be an e-learning specialist.
About the team:
Let’s try to individuate 5 Hard Skills, which e-learning specialist must necessarily possess as a member of the e-learning team.
